We welcome you to A Very Merry Whidbey Christmas with a Sing-Along MESSIAH!
We are excited to be presenting this Holiday tradition again on Whidbey Island. For those of you who have not participated in a Sing-Along Messiah, this will be an exciting new experience. Handel's Messiah had its first performance, not during the Christmas season, but on April 13, 1742. The tradition of a Christmas performance of Messiah was started in America by the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston in 1819. Messiah remains, not only one of the most performed Christmas works but the single most performed major choral work ever written.
Tickets: $30 Adult / $25 Senior-Military / Free for Students 17 and under
Box Office opens at 1pm on December 17. Credit Cards/Cash/Checks welcome!

1) How long does this concert last?
Answer: This year's concert will last approximately 2 hours. The first half of the concert will be enjoying and participating in the Messiah and the second half will be fun Christmas tunes to put us in the holiday spirit.
2) Do I need to bring my own music?
Answer: BYOM (Bring Your Own Music) - if you have a vocal score.
Thanks to our friends at the Everett Philhamonic, we will have a limited number of scores available for a $5 rental at the door on a first-come, first-served basis.
3) Where can I get a score of my own?
Answer: Click Music in Oak Harbor (360) 675-5544
(We will be using the Schirmer editions, however all other editions will work as well.)
4) Are people required to sing?
Answer: No, not at all. Singing is optional. Thus, if you come with a friend and one of you wants to sing and the other one does not to, that is just fine. You can come and simply listen if you want to.
5) Is there reserved seating?
Answer: Not really. All seating is unassigned, and is therefore "general" in a sense. However, we do set aside a few rows in the front which are designated by voice-range (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass.) After that, the rest of the space is open seating and people can sit wherever they like in whatever grouping they care to make.
6) Do I have to sit in the correct section?
Answer: It makes things easier to see cues from the conductor and section leaders, but if you came with a group of experienced friends of different voice parts, and you would like to sing together, you certainly may. Just sit in the rows behind the established SATB sections.
7) Does the audience sing-along on every piece?
Answer: No, just the choruses. The arias and recitatives will be sung by our soloists from.
This performance will include the following choruses:
#4 And the Glory of the Lord
#9 O Thou, That Tellest Good Tidings
#12 For Unto Us a Child is Born
#17 Glory to God
#44 Hallelujah
8) That rest at the end of the Hallelujah! Chorus always “gets me”. How can I remember NOT to sing through the rest?
Answer: You can either watch the conductor, OR use your fingers and count the last four Hallelujahs before the rest, then STOP, LISTEN, LOOKUP, and come back in with the director.
9) Is there any way to practice beforehand?
Answer: YES! Thanks to YouTube, here are practice aids that help rehearse the chorus parts:
#4 And the Glory (CHORUS) SOPRANO ALTO TENOR BASS
#9 O Thou that Tellest (Alto soloist with CHORUS) SOPRANO ALTO TENOR BASS
#12 For Unto us a Child is Born (CHORUS) SOPRANO ALTO TENOR BASS
#17 Glory to God (CHORUS) SOPRANO ALTO TENOR BASS
#44 Hallelujah (CHORUS) SOPRANO ALTO TENOR BASS
10) Do I need to register to sing?
Answer: It is helpful for us to know how many people want to sit in each section and we will try our best to accommodate everyone.
